The idea for the Super Mario Fansite Network was formed in the mid-2010s by Shadow Yoshi (of Stardust Fields and Super Mario Bros. X) and the original planning period took place in 2017 and early 2018. Of course, as is often the case with running a fansite itself, other priorities in life got in the way. SMFN was finally able to come to fruition in the summer of 2026.

Aside from minor editorial descriptions for the sites listed, SMFN is designed to function mostly as a network and directory rather than a content-driven fansite in itself, and will not be posting or updating with any regularity except to add fansites and their information. That said, SMFN is open 24/7 and I (Shadow Yoshi) am always available via email if you'd like to get in touch for any reason!

Right now, a lot of the directory listings are archived using the Internet Archive Wayback Machine. This is an important tool that will continue to be used as other fansites from the past are discovered. Eventually, however, a goal for SMFN is to provide hosting for these archives instead; this will ensure the sites can be viewed more easily and, ideally, without the need to navigate different archive snapshots.

In recent years, thanks in large part to sites like Neocities, individual simple website creation has seen a massive resurgence. Hopefully this trend continues!

1-Up World is the Discord server for Mario - run by fans, for fans. In addition to being a one-stop shop for Mario news and a place to connect with other fans, 1-Up World's staff were supportive during the early planning stages of SMFN and did a lot of groundwork on the Discord side of things to keep different Mario communities connected. Be sure to join this server if you haven't yet!
